Despite being a suburban city, Bristol continues to be a fountain of British culture and has created its own unique culture starting with art and music. We interviewed husband and wife Francesca and Jimmy, who both live in Bristol as artist and musician, about their thoughts on their creativity, and about their experiences and what led them to where they are now.

First off could you please tell us about your musical / artistic activities and history, and the reason behind them.
Francesca < F >
My career as an artist has evolved slowly. I have always loved creating, drawing, painting, sewing, making. But have also done other things like teaching. Art is something I have perennially returned to - I can't escape it! About five years ago I decided to commit myself to it and see where it took me, and I have been building up a portfolio and working on commissions ever since.
Jimmy < J >
I've been playing music, either solo or in bands since I was about 6, but I really got going as a teenager; I've played all over the world in all kinds of venues, made little records and videos independently, and had the honour of knowing and working with some truly great artists. I'd say the highlight of my career was supporting Amy Winehouse at one of her first gigs in Bristol. I once also played in Rufus Wainwright's band at a massive American stadium. I was so nervous my knees were knocking together.

Are there any artists, musicians or designers etc. that have influenced you?
< F > At university I studied English literature. I have always read and am greatly inspired by literature. I immerse myself in fiction and imagine visual worlds to go with the novels that I read. At home I have shelves full of books - everything from Tolstoy and D H Lawrence to Margaret Atwood and Ann Tyler. I also own stacks of children’s picture books which I turn to for inspiration. I love the illustrations of the late Errol Le Cain and also the Swedish painter John Bauer. I am half Finnish and have spent many summers in Finland and admire the work of Tove Jansson. Many of the writers and illustrators I am inspired by encapsulate and convey a sense of mythology, both ancient and modern which appeals to me. I am eternally fascinated by our relationship with nature and how we inhabit the spaces and areas we live in. In my work there is often a sense of the outside and inside blending into one another, whilst the people sit somewhere in the middle.
< J > I appreciate melancholic authors such as Salinger or darker musicians such as Nick Cave or Bowie in his 'Low' period. I adore anything which is romantically forlorn and which shuns current trends, which tend to have no substance or lasting value. We will still be listening to Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen (– Nov 7, 2016) in a century. Others, not so much.

Where do you get inspiration from in your activities?
< J > I'm inspired by an interior dialogue, an incessant babbling of thoughts and melodies which for some reason I feel compelled to share with the outside world! At the moment I am writing lyrics which strive to be subtly political without being preachy. It's proving very difficult.
This is a question for Jimmy. Bristol is said to have established the “Bristol Sound” in the music scene in the 1990s including UK Dub, did you know this scene at the time? If so, what was it like?
< J > Bristol had reached me long before I ever arrived here. The big three: Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky were the aural wallpaper to a special era in British music which sadly I don't think we'll see again.
We hear you are creating a benefit track with members of Portishead, Radiohead and Massive Attack...
< J > I'm very very sorry, but I can't talk about this project until it's released! Apologies! Wait and see..
How is the UK music scene and UK culture at the moment?
< J > Bristol continues to have one of the best music scenes in the country: loads of live venues, world-class musicians of every style, and I think a spirit of cooperation that you might not find in a larger city.

Do you have sessions together and/or collaborate together? Are there any areas where you mutually inspire one other?
< F > In the evening when the kids have gone to bed, Jimmy and I will often work alongside each other. He’ll compose and play music whilst I paint and sketch. I feel lucky to have a creative partner, someone to work ideas through with. We have never directly collaborated but it is something I would like to do in the future.
< J > Francesca has been the inspiration for several ballads I have written! We usually spend our evenings playing music and painting. We 'collaborate' mainly on the kids, trying to guide their creative instincts into music and art...

Do you have any moments of realisation, inspiration etc. when you create? If so what kind of moments are these?

< F > Ideas frequently come to me just before I fall asleep. Images float up out of the darkness. I keep a sketch book next to my bed so that I can quickly sketch ideas down.

< J > Songs can come to me quite slowly, emerging from a fog of sound or mood. Usually a juicy lyric strikes me, some turn of phrase which guides the rest of the work. I probably have a hundred Eureka moments each day; it all comes down to which one you decide to act upon.

What do you think is the most interesting part of Bristol?
< F > Bristol has a thriving art scene, there are so many creative people living and working here. We have recently moved to the countryside just outside Bristol, so that our kids can live closer to nature and have a more innocent childhood slightly removed from the hectic pace of city life. It’s nice to be able to experience the creative buzz of the city, and then retreat back to our quiet country idyll at the end of the day.
< J > Bristol is attractive because it has so many elements in one very manageably-sized space. If you want gritty urban decay, you can have that. If you want stately and elegant, you can have that. It's also very easy to escape into some very lush countryside here. It's a place where you can live any number of lifestyles simultaneously.
If you were to take a trip where would you go?
< F > There are many places I would like to travel: India, for the colour, New Zealand for the dramatic landscapes, the Outer Hebrides for wilderness, Egypt for history. Japan for the cherry blossom.
< J > I've traveled all over the world, but still never made it to Africa. Morocco and Tunisia are of particular interest to me musically.
What is your idea of paradise?
< F > Paradise is: sitting at the kitchen table and painting, with a glass of beer and a candle next to me. The house is quiet and the children are asleep upstairs. I can just see the silhouette of the forest at the end of our garden with the moon rising above it.
< J > Paradise? Any more than 6 hours of sleep is close enough.

What is your idea of adventure?
< F > Adventure is: going camping somewhere along the wild coastline of the united Kingdom with our bell tent and our children. Swimming in the wild, heaving sea, cooking on a campfire and going to sleep at night in our tent with a thunderstorm raging around us.
< J > I suppose adventure takes on many forms. When I was younger it was getting lost in strange cities or hiking in the Himalayas. At the moment raising five children is intensely adventurous...

Living in a home surrounded by nature, away from the centre of Bristol, they create in resonance with one another. With an enriched life as their focus, and their own established style, Francesca and Jimmy continue creating without end.
